Scale and Randomization

Scale setup and the controls that shape random R notes.

Melodyspawner can invent a full melody from a randomized Notes pattern such as R R R R. The scale and randomization controls decide which pitches those Rs are allowed to become.

Scale

  • Root note is the root of the selected scale
  • Octave is the octave of that scale
  • Scale is the scale type
  • Intervals control sets of types of the selected scale

Pick the key first, then use the controls below to bias how random notes move.

Bounds

Upper bound limits how high an R note can go. For C1 major with an upper bound of 4, the highest R note can be G1.

Lower bound limits how low an R note can go. For C1 major with a lower bound of -2, the lowest R note can be A1.

Direction

Pitch direction controls the direction of R notes. With ascending selected, R notes always rise. When every remaining possibility is used up, the pattern repeats. Descending and any-order modes work the same way for their own rule.

Repeat notes

When Repeat is off, R notes only become pitches that are not already present in the created note pattern. If there are more R notes than remaining possibilities, that rule is dropped and repeats are allowed again.

A simple generative setup

  1. Set root, octave, and scale.
  2. Put something like R R R R in Notes and a rhythm such as xxxx in Rhythm Pattern.
  3. Adjust bounds, direction, and repeat until the contour feels right.
  4. Click Render, or keep tweaking.
